I have been using Postman desktop recently to access API on a specific site. I created a collection and gave it a name. This morning I signed up for an account and when I was returned to the desktop my collection had vanished. Only when I signed out again did the collection reappear. I am sure that there must be an obvious reason for this. How do I save the collection to the signed in version? Should I have created a Workspace? I do not want to lose my collection.

Try exporting the collection, then sign in to your account and import it back in.
